Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer Overview

Author: admin  //  Category: prognosis

Stage III ovarian cancer is a more serious level of cancer, which has spread to include the pelvic area and organs, and the abdominal organs (liver, bowels, lymph nodes, etc.), and it is easier to diagnose. It is used as part of the prognosis made by a doctor.

Stage III ovarian cancer is then further defined by the TNM determination rating system. TNM is defined to mean to tumor size, node inclusion, metastasis or spread status and grade of the tumor. It will ultimately let doctors known how long a patient has to live and whether they will survive. These factors include:

Each part is defined as follows:

TNM determination rating system

Tumor size – Due to the spread of Stage III, the tumors can only be defined as one of the following:

T3: the tumor is inside one (or both) ovary; the tumor spread includes tissues in the pelvic region, outside the pelvic region and lymph node (s); cancerous cells are found in the abdominal fluids (ascites) or the abdominal cavity washes (peritoneal lavage)

T3a: the tumor is inside one (or both) ovary; the tumor spread includes tissues in the pelvic region, outside the pelvic region and beyond the pelvic region

T3b: the tumor is inside one (or both) ovary; the tumor spread includes tissues in the pelvic region, outside the pelvic region and beyond the pelvic region that are now a maximum size of up to 2cm, and can be seen without a microscope

T3c: the tumor is inside one (or both) ovary; the tumor spread includes tissues in the pelvic region, outside the pelvic region and beyond the pelvic region that is now a 2cm or more in size, and can be seen easily

Node inclusion – As the cancer is at Stage III its classification is:

N1: the tumor has spread to include the lymph nodes

Metastasis or spread determination – As Stage III cancer has been found, only the following classification can be used:

M1: metastases have been found somewhere

Grade of the tumor

The grading of a tumor shows the maturity of the cancerous cells inside the ovary (s). As the cancer is now at Stage III, it can only be classified as the following:

Grade 2: a combination of both normal and cancerous cells; cancerous cells account for about every other cell

Grade 3: very few normal cells if any are left; most or all cells are cancerous

The lower the grade, the slower a tumor will grow, and the better the patient’s chance of survival. The higher the grade, the quicker the tumor may grow or spread, and the chances of survival are greatly diminished. In this case, Stage III ovarian cancer has greatly reduced the patient’s chances of recovery and/or survival.

Stage groupings

The stage groupings are used to show the order of the varied factors included in the TNM determination rating system. Stage III groupings are as follows:

Stage III

Stage IIIa: T3a, N0, M0

Stage IIIb: T3b, N0, M0

Stage IIIc: T3c, N0, M0, or T(varied), N1, M0

Brain Cancer Symptoms

Author: admin  //  Category: prognosis

Brain cancer accounts for about 1.4% of all cancer cases and about 2.4% of all cancer deaths. This may not seems like a lot but don’t let the numbers fool you on the severity of brain cancer. Once the cancer turns malignant, the tumors grow aggressively and overpower the healthy cells taking up their space, blood and nutrients. This is an area of grave concern because the brain is the most important part of your body and controls everything. Whenever there is something wrong with your brain, it affects the entire body. Knowing what the brain cancer symptoms are and able to recognize these symptoms is incredibly important for our prognosis and survival from this deadly disease.

The biggest problem with brain cancer and brain tumors is that their symptoms are often nonspecific making it is very difficult to know if you have it or not, unless you are seriously looking for it. The most common symptoms of brain cancer are headaches, general weaknesses, difficulty in walking, clumsiness and seizures. Other more serious symptoms include difficulty with speech, abnormal vision, nausea, vomiting, quick emotional changes, and an altered mental state. An altered mental state can include changes in concentration, memory, intellectual capacity, attention and alertness.

Several different factors can cause these symptoms. Some of these symptoms are caused by the tumor pressing on different parts of the brain and impairing them from functioning properly. The symptoms can also be caused by the swelling of the brain, the tumor or the area around the tumor. Unfortunately, these brain cancer symptoms usually develop very slowly and gradually over time and this makes it really difficult for anyone to confirm the existence of this deadly disease. For instance, people often think that a headache is just a headache or that the dizziness felt is due to any other reasons except cancer. If these symptoms occur frequently and very rapidly, you should definitely visit your doctor to see what the problem is.

The doctors will often make you take a CT scan if they feel you have brain cancer. A CT scan is like an x-ray except in shows the brain in three-dimensions. A harmless dye is usually injected into your bloodstream to make abnormalities more visible in the CT scan. Other tests include blood tests, liver tests, urine tests and blood coagulation profiles. MRI scans are sometimes used instead of CT scans. The reason for this is because MRI has a better ability to assess the changes in a tumor.

Brain cancer is an incredibly serious form of cancer and it is important for us to know what these brain cancer symptoms are so that we can take necessary action to arrest the situation early. If you suspect you are suffering or are suffering from these symptoms, please consult your doctor early to ascertain your actual medical condition. If brain cancer is confirmed, discuss with your doctor for an appropriate course of treatment best suited for you. An early intervention increases your chances for an early recovery and a prolonged survival.

Treatment For Throat Cancer

Author: admin  //  Category: prognosis

The throat cancer treatment depends on lot of factor. The most important factor is the location of the tumor in the throat. The other factors include the size of the tumor, the stage of the disease, age and other physical conditions. It is advised to consult a physician to examine the nature of the throat cancer and the physical condition of the body. The examination will be helpful in devising the nature of the treatment to be carried out.

Surgery:  The surgery is usually done to remove the tumor in the throat. The surgery is the main treatment for the pharyngeal cancer. The surgery is of two types depending on the cancer. Either the surgery is done to remove the tumor or to be done to improve the other functions. While going for a surgery there is less chance for any post-surgery complications like bleeding or blockage. If the tumor is in early stage then a small surgery is done to remove the tumor, else the surgery will become extensive. The laser microsurgery is a type of surgery usually carried out to treat those medium and small size tumors. The advantage of this type of surgery is preservation of normal tissues, lesser hospital stay and fewer post-surgery complications. The tracheotomy is not necessary in this type of surgery.

Radiation therapy: The radiation therapy is done with the help of x-rays to kill the cancer cells or to make them inactive. Usually this type of therapy is done to treat small tumor. It the tumor is large then the radiation therapy is combined with other therapy like chemotherapy to treat the cancer. If the tumor is so small that cannot be removed during the surgery can be removed with this radiation therapy. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is the advanced therapy available in the radiation therapy. The IMRT uses computer program to decide the exact amount of the radiation to be given for the treatment. The High Dose Radiation (HDR) brachytherapy is another form of the radiotherapy used to radiate from the inside out spares that surround the other healthy region around the tumor. The main advantage of this type is it reduces the chance of surgery treatment.

Chemotherapy: Using of drugs to cure the tumors is called chemo therapy. The drugs are taken either through the veins are orally. The type of the treatment and the drugs to be taken depends on the nature of the throat cancer. If the tumor is large then the treatment is combination of the chemotherapy with other therapy or surgery. The chemotherapy is used to treat the cancer that has spread extensively beyond the throat region. Fractionated Dose Chemotherapy is a type of chemo therapy which divides the dosage of the drugs into smaller dose and is given over several days.

Angiogenesis inhibitors: This is a type of medication which is used to stop the growth of new blood vessels that is needed by the cancer cells to grow. Cetuximab or erbitux is used for this purpose. These drugs are recently approved to be used with chemotherapy to treat the tumor in the oral cavity.

Multiple Sclerosis Prognosis – Many Patients Can Live For Years With MS

Author: admin  //  Category: prognosis

Before looking at the prognosis for a person diagnosed with MS we should take a look at what MS really is. MS is an autoimmune disease in which the body treats its white blood cells as an invader and attempts to destroy them. In this process the body actually damages certain areas of itself, in the MS patient the damage usually occurs to the myelin layer that surrounds both the brain and the spinal column. Prognosis for multiple sclerosis patients can vary depending on the severity of the damage done and on the individual.

While it is difficult to set down a specific prognosis for multiple sclerosis patients they tend to fall into one of four main categories than can range from mild to severe in nature and can have a variety of effects on the patient.

The relapsing- remitting patient is one that realizes a partial or total recovery after an exacerbation. This description fits approximately 85% of all patients with multiple sclerosis. The prognosis for these patients is good in that most of these patients will be able to continue to enjoy a relatively normal life that includes continuing to work and function normally for many years.

For the relapsing-remitting patient whose condition steadily worsens the stage is called secondary-progressive. Here attacks and partial recoveries may keep occurring and for patients with this form of multiple sclerosis the prognosis is not as good. As the disease progresses it may lead to loss of mobility and quality of life.

The prognosis for a multiple sclerosis patient who is diagnosed with primary-progressive MS is not good as the symptoms that occur as a result of MS generally do not go into remission. Instead they tend to have a more permanent effect on the patient. This form of MS only affects about 10% of all MS sufferers and is characterized by the fact that the patient has been living with the disabilities for a long period of time with no acute attacks.

For the 5% of patients suffering from the progressive -relapsing form of multiple sclerosis the prognosis is likely to be characterized by acute attacks along the way leading to permanent disabilities and a shortened lifespan. Fortunately this is a very rare occurrence.

However for most MS patients a regimen of exercise and a healthy diet that is rich in greens and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids has been shown to reduce the effects and symptoms significantly. By using diet instead of increased medication you can lead a much longer healthier life.

I have benefited greatly from a book which has examined the link between what we eat and multiple sclerosis. If you would like to know what foods are attacking your body, what supplements you must take and how to create the energy that you need, then this book is a must read. Reverse Multiple Sclerosis
